Download and install the best gadgets

Desktop gadgets were one of the best new features to be introduced with Windows Vista. They are small tools that sit on your desktop and give you instant access to news, information and common tasks. Choosing the right gadgets for your desktop can drastically change the way you use your computer.
The best thing about desktop gadgets is that they have been embraced by companies and developers, so there are thousands of gadgets available to download, and you’re guaranteed to find some to suit your needs. There are a lot of gadgets out there to choose between, but by reading user reviews and comparing features, you’ll have no problem finding and installing the best ones for you.
    Step-by-step: Use desktop gadgets
    1 View already installed gadgets
Windows Vista and Windows 7 come with preinstalled gadgets. To add these to your desktop, just right-click and select Gadgets. This brings up a window called Gadget Gallery that contains all the gadgets on your PC. If you’ve got a lot of gadgets, you can use the search box in the top-right corner.
2 Add an already installed gadget
To add a gadget to your desktop, either right-click on the gadget and select Add or double-click on the gadget’s icon. The gadget then appears on your desktop. You can move it by clicking on it and dragging it to your desired location. To remove the gadget, hover the mouse over it and click the X icon.
    3 Get more gadgets online
You can download and install lots of other gadgets from the internet. The easiest way to do this is to click Get more gadgets online from the Gadget Gallery window. Scroll down the page and you’ll see some recommended gadgets. Click the Get more desktop gadgets link to view even more.
    4 Choose your gadget
There are so many gadgets that you might have trouble finding the right one for you. Thankfully, Microsoft’s desktop gadget gallery website makes it easy for you to choose. On the left-hand side under Sidebar you can choose the category of gadget you want, from ‘Fun and games’ to ‘Tools and utilities’.
    5 Check the reviews
Every gadget has user reviews, where people who have tried the gadget can let others know what they think. This is a great way of finding out if a gadget is worth downloading. Each gadget also gets an average rating out five, so you can quickly see how popular it is. To see the full reviews, click the name of the gadget.
6 Download and install your chosen gadget
Once you’ve decided on a gadget, click Download. Some gadgets might be from third parties, so a window pops up asking if you wish to continue. This is why reading user reviews is so important – you’ll know if the gadget is safe. Click Install and then Open. At the Security Warning window click Install.
    7 Configure your gadgets
Once the gadget has been installed, it is automatically added to your desktop. Some gadgets may require you to configure them before they work properly. To configure a gadget, hover the mouse over it and select the spanner icon, which takes you to the gadget’s options.
    8 Enjoy your gadgets
Congratulations! You’re now all set to enhance your Windows desktop with the best gadgets the internet has to offer. By checking out the features lists and user reviews of the gadgets available, you can be sure to install gadgets that will make your computing life easier!
